Course Description:
This course introduces the foundations of analysis designed to precede the calculus sequence with emphasis on functions and graphs. Topics include properties of absolute value, polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions; techniques for solving equations and inequalities, and an introduction to the concept of limits and the difference quotient. You will be able to analyze, interpret, and apply quantitative information as well as accurately translate descriptive problems into mathematical formulas and solve them.
Materials Needed:
• Three ring binder (I suggest at least 1 inch) Spiral Notebook will also work with a folder.
• Loose Leaf paper
• Pencils
• I recommend the following calculator: TI-84+C Silver Ed. It can be found at Staples or Wal-Mart, check on-line for prices before buying. If you have any questions regarding a calculator, please don’t hesitate to ask.
Earning your Grade:
Grades for each 9 weeks are determined by the following percentages:
• Participation, homework, classwork 20%
• Tests and Quizzes 80%
***Students can expect a test or quiz usually once every other week
Final Grades will be calculated with each 9 weeks counting 40% each and the Exam worth 20%.
Grading System:
A 100 – 90
B 89 – 80
C 79 – 70
D 69 – 60
F 59 and below
Homework/Class Assignments:
• Homework and Class assignments are an essential part of your success in this class. Work is assigned to aid in the learning process.
• Homework and classwork will be graded sometimes for completion and sometimes for correctness depending on the assignment.
• Missed assignments are zeros unless we have spoken about the matter beforehand.
Tests and Quizzes:
You will have a major test or quiz at least once every two weeks. Tests and quizzes will be a mix of short answer and multiple-choice questions. I want to see your thought process, even if you get the final answer wrong, you may be able to get some points for your work. Don’t ever give up!
Behavior:
• Students are expected to arrive on time and be seated in their assigned seat when the final bell rings.
• No Food
• Students are expected to bring all materials to class. This includes their binder, paper and pencil.
• Students are expected to be respectful and responsible.
• Students are expected to act in a manner that is not disruptive to the learning environment.
• All school rules are to be followed.
To the student: Remember, YOU are responsible for your success in this class. Please make every effort to be present, prepared,
