Course Description:

Geometry is the study of points, angles, lines, shapes and 3-D figures.  This geometry course includes reasoning, trigonometry, traditional and nontraditional geometries, and proofs.   Using pictures to represent a problem is an important mathematical skill.  Studying geometry provides many foundational skills and helps to build the thinking skills of logic, deductive reasoning, analytical reasoning and problem solving to name just a few.  My ultimate goal in teaching this course is to make math accessible and enjoyable.

Materials Needed:

  • Three ring binder (I suggest at least 1 inch) or spiral notebook
  • Loose leaf paper
  • Pencils (no pens please)
  • Students need the following calculator: TI-84+ CE.   We will also be using a web-based calculator (Desmos, look it up its awesome!) and google classroom.

Earning your Grade:

Grades for each 9 weeks are determined by the following percentages:

  • Participation, classwork, homework                                                                                10%
  • Tests, quizzes, and other in class assessments                                               90%

***Students can expect a test or quiz usually once every other week.  I know that this distribution of points is new, however as this is an honors class the weight should be on assessments.  The ultimate goal is mastering the concepts of Geometry and preparing students for the next level of mathematics.
Final Grades will be calculated with each 9 weeks counting 40% each and the Exam worth 20% or as close to that as possible

Grading System:

                                                A             100 – 90

                                                B             89 – 80

                                                C             79 – 70

                                                D             69 – 60

                                                F              59 and below

Homework/Class Assignments:

  • Homework and Class assignments are an essential part of your success in this class.  Work is assigned to aid in the learning process.
  • Homework and classwork will be graded sometimes for completion and sometimes for correctness depending on the assignment.   We complete our work for knowledge, not for points.
  • Missed assignments are zeros unless we have spoken about the matter beforehand, I’m flexible please communicate.

Tests and Quizzes:

You will have a major test or quiz at least once every two weeks.  Tests and quizzes will be a mix of short answer and multiple-choice questions.   I want to see your thought process, even if you get the final answer wrong, you may be able to get some points for your work.  We will use the Pearson web portal for the vast majority of our assessments.  Don’t ever give up!

Behavior:

  • Students are expected to arrive on time and be seated in their assigned seat when the final bell rings.
  • Students are expected to bring all materials to class.   This includes their binder, paper and pencil.
  • Students are expected to be respectful and responsible.
  • Students are expected to act in a manner that is not disruptive to the learning environment.
  • All school rules are to be followed.

To the student: Remember, YOU are responsible for your success in this class.  Please make every effort to be present, prepared, and use your class time efficiently.   Honors classes come with an expectation of student effort outside the classroom.  Ask questions when you do not understand.
