The first semester and second grading period ends on January 19th. Students will begin the second semester on Tuesday, January 23rd. There will be no school for students on Monday, January 15th to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Monday, January 22nd for a district professional development day. Thanks to our staff and students for a great first half of the year! I look forward to many more accomplishments in the next few months!

Thank you to our awesome CHS and CMS Science Departments as well as the Science Fair Advisor, Becky Karl, for their hard work and dedication this year with the Science Fair. Job well done! Congratulations to all of the CMS participants from this past week. Finally, thank you to all of the volunteer judges. We could not have done this without any of you. There will be another Science Fair Night on Thursday, January 18th for CHS students due to school being out for weather related closures. Hope to see you in attendance.

January is School Board Recognition Month. I want to thank Wayne Brassell, Stephen Coleman, Blanche Nemeth, Shawn Ondrejko and Megan Champagne for their service to Columbia Local Schools and our community. Below is a letter I like to share with our community each year.

School board members are ordinary people who have an extraordinary dedication to our public schools. It is time we thanked them for their untiring efforts. Too often we forget about the personal sacrifices school board members routinely make. Too often we forget about the important role school board members play in assuring local control over our public schools, control that is in the hands of people we know … people who are our neighbors. Too often we forget that, in the tradition of a representative democracy, school board members are our connection to influencing how our public schools are governed. Too often we are quick to criticize school board members without really knowing all the details that went into any given decision. Too often the efforts of school board members go unrecognized and unrewarded. We can begin to correct these oversights this January, which is School Board Recognition Month. This is a time to show our appreciation and to begin to better understand how school board members work together to provide leadership for our schools. The school board works closely with parents, education professionals and community members to create the educational vision we want for our students. It then formulates goals, defines results and sets the course for an adequate and equitable educational program for all students.   The school board is accountable to the public. It is responsible for assuring the public that the money allocated to the public schools is providing a good return on the investment. Thus, the board oversees regular assessment of the district’s students, staff and programs. The school board also is a strong advocate for public schools and is responsible for communicating the needs of the school district to the public and the public’s expectations to the district. In January, join with others from throughout our district and state to salute the men and women who provide grassroots governance of public schools. Make a special effort to tell each school board member his or her hard work has been noticed and is very much appreciated.

We are always looking to improve the quality of the school district and the services we provide. If you have a suggestion, question or comment please feel free to call me at (440) 236-5008 or email bansekg@columbia.k12.oh.us

Congratulations to Ms. Brittany Atkinson, CHS Science teacher, for receiving the Raider Nation Excellence Award for November!  Other staff nominated for the month’s award include:  Alice Rheaume, Donna Novak, Julie Bowes, Joye Martin, Arlene Garibotti, Carol Roginsky, Katie McDonnell, Diana Brunner, Robert Magyar and Joye Martin.  Thank you for all that you do for our students and CLSD!

If we need to cancel school due to inclement weather, all parents will receive a call via our all-call system.  This call will be made no later than 6:15 am.  It will also be posted on local television stations, website and Twitter.  The determination on whether or not to have school during winter weather is not an easy decision, nor is it taken lightly.  Not only do we have buses that are driving in the winter weather, I also have to take into consideration that teenagers are driving to and from the high school.  I have conversations with Mr. Rundle, Columbia Township Road Superintendent, about our local roads, our transportation and maintenance supervisors and local superintendents.  If the buses begin to roll, school will be in session.  If school is in session and you choose not to send your child that is a decision you make as a parent.  I will make a decision that I feel is necessary for the safety and well-being of the children of CLSD.  If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.

The holidays are right around the corner and we have many concerts to help you get into the spirit.  Our students have worked really hard to show off their talents.  We are hoping that you can attend!

December 19th – 1/3 Grade Program at CMS at 7:00 pm
December 21st – CHS Band and Choir at 7:00 pm

Winter break will begin on Monday, December 25th through January 2nd.  The last day for staff and students is Friday, December 22th.  Staff and students will return to school on Wednesday, January 3rd.  Everyone at CLSD would like to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!  My next article will appear on January 8th.

We are always looking to improve the quality of the school district and the services we provide.  If you have a suggestion, question or comment please feel free to call me at (440) 236-5008 or email bansekg@columbia.k12.oh.us
