On Wednesday, May 24th CLSD will auction property located at 13516 West River Road. This property consists of 2.62 acres of land, a house, detached garage and two barns. The auction will be held at the Administration Center at 9:00 am. The district will hold open houses at the property on May 10th from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm and May 24th from 9:00 am – 11:00 am. If you are interested in viewing the house but cannot fit these two days in your schedule or you have additional questions, please contact me at 236-5008.

Recently, CLSD was awarded a District Market Development Grant for three new benches located outside of Copopa/CMS. We would like to thank the Lorain County Board of Commissioners and the Lorain County Solid Waste Management District. The benches were installed this past week and are made of recycled plastic. The whole point of recycling solid waste is to provide raw materials for the manufacture of new goods. This program is designed to indirectly increase the collection of those raw materials by stimulating the demand for them. By subsidizing the purchase of materials and finished goods containing recycled material, these grants will automatically raise the demand for such material, through the basic free market mechanism of supply and demand. We are very excited for this addition to our schools!

May 1-5th is Staff Appreciation Week. It is a week to pay tribute to our teachers and support staff. I would like to take this opportunity to recognize and thank them for dedicating their lives to the education of our children. The responsibility of educating students makes teaching one of the most important jobs there is. The work of the dedicated people in CLSD is priceless. Teacher and staff appreciation week presents a wonderful opportunity to thank the teachers and support staff for their commitment to children and for their contributions to our community. The entire staff makes a difference in the lives of every student. They are role models for all youth. Their job is difficult and their responsibility great. The staff literally holds the future of our children in their hands. The education our children receive today will lead to their success later in life. The staff not only teaches, they serve as mentors, role models, and confidants for our children. Please find time to say thank you to the staff during the week. All CLSD staff should be commended for a job well done throughout this school year. With your continued hard work and determination, Columbia Local Schools will continue its rank of excellence. Thank you to our staff for helping to build a brighter future one student at a time.

I would like to officially welcome our new CMS Principal, Mr. Robert Magyar. Bob comes to us with three years of administrative experience and nine years teaching at the middle school level. He will be a great fit for our students and staff at CMS. For those of you that didn't know, Mr. Gibson has accepted a job with Amherst Schools. We wish Mr. Gibson the best of luck and thank him for his service to CMS.

Beginning in the 2017-18 school year, CLSD will offer before/after school care for students in grades K-6. This will be at no cost to the district. Parents will assume costs if they choose to use this service. More information will be provided to parents in the coming weeks. I would like to thank all of you that completed the survey. This is yet another great service to offer in our schools.
