The students of Columbia Local Schools continue to achieve at the highest of levels. A great staff and community are the reasons for our success. This is what makes CLSD one of the best school districts in the State of Ohio. We are proud of the accomplishments of OUR students, staff and community. Thank you for being so supportive!

Rural Urban Record - April 22, 2019

Columbia Local Schools has a job opening for a bus mechanic.  We would like to fill it immediately.  Requirements for the position:  mechanic must hold ASE certification and have the knowledge to diagnose problems and repair school buses; mechanic must hold a school bus driver’s license validation or have the ability to acquire within one calendar year.  This position is full time with benefits.  If you are interested, please contact Al Cantrell, Transportation Supervisor, at (440) 236-8222.

Rural Urban Record - April 15, 2019

Spring Break will take place from Friday, April 19th through April 28th.  Please enjoy the time off and be safe in your travels.  School will resume on Monday, April 29th.  When we return there are only 23 days of school left.

There will be no school for students on Thursday, April 18th.  This is a professional development day for staff.  The district will be providing our staff information about Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports and our new emergency operations plan.     

I want to take this opportunity to congratulate the cast and crew of the “Wizard of Oz!”  The talents of our students are amazing.  Thank you as well to Mr. Bunner and Mr. Ward for their Broadway debut!  Mrs. Garrow and Ms. Neff did a tremendous job with the spring musical and I cannot thank them enough!  All of the shows were well attended and everyone had a great time including Toto!  Can’t wait for next year.

Rural Urban Record - April 8, 2019

Columbia Local Schools will hold its annual “State of the Schools” on Wednesday, April 10th at 7:00 pm at Columbia Middle School in the gymnasium.  There will be many important items discussed about the future of CLSD, including the new and exciting things that will be offered in our schools in the 2019-20 school year.  Prior to this event, there will be a Board of Education meeting at 5:30 pm.  It is our hope that you can join us on this important evening.

This November, CLSD will have two levies on the ballot:  A renewal Permanent Improvement levy (no additional taxes) and a Substitute levy (no additional taxes).  More information will be shared at our State of the Schools on April 10th as well as on our website and focus groups in the coming months.

A reminder that CLSD will hold an important Little Raiders Preschool meeting on Tuesday, April 9th at 6:00 pm in the Copopa Media Center.  If you are interested in preschool, you should attend.  This meeting is for parents only.  More information can be found on our district website.

Recently, we completed the third nine weeks grading period.  Our students are doing remarkable things both inside the classroom and out.  I am very proud of their accomplishments to this point in the school year.  Cumulative grade point averages for those in grades 5-12 was 3.3 overall.  Our winter student athletes GPA’s were as follows:  Cheerleaders – 3.47, Boys Basketball – 3.57, Girls Basketball 3.79 and Wresting – 3.30.  Great job and continued success!

Rural Urban Record - April 1, 2019

The CHS Drama Department proudly presents the Wizard of OZ.  Show times will be on Friday, April 5th at 7:00 pm and Saturday, April 6th at noon and 7:00 pm.  Tickets are $5.00 at the door.  Come and see our student’s musical talent on display.  You might even get to see a couple of staff members play a vital part in the production as well.  Break a leg!

Recently, Sodexo held their Future Chef competition.  This year’s menu item was Mexican.  We had six contestants who were asked to cook a meal for the judges:  Jonathon Lambillotte, Kaitlyn Glandorf, Canon Erman, Mason Antos, Gracie Isenhour and Lila Seggie.  Congratulations to this year’s champion, 4th grader Kaitlyn Glandorf, who won with her 7 layer vegetarian quesadilla.  I would also like to thank Mr. Bunner, Mr. Magyar and Jackie Pring for judging this competition and all of our food service employees for helping the students.  Awesome job future chefs!

Congratulations to the CMS student students that participated in the Mohican District Science Fair at Ashland University last weekend.  Cameron Baker, Rachel Bledsoe, Delaney Friscone, Bella Stofey, Nathan Chapman, Max Elliott, Madelyn Fox, Savanna Gonzalez, Alianna Ibarra, Sami Markosky, Vaneassa Pierce, Ethan Plants, Alyse Young, Caden Davison, Bella Herhuth, Ava Mescan, and Alexis Miller all received Excellent Ratings.  Samantha Geiger, Logan Cleavenger, Selah Davison, Kaitlyn Miller, Maggie Murray and Addison Stair received Superior Ratings.  Great job, students!

Congratulations to the students that represented CHS at the 59th Mohican District Science Fair at Ashland University.  Caitlin Wilkins received an Excellent Rating.  Landon Hunt and Madeleine Finton received Superior Ratings.  Once again, great job to the students!

Rural Urban Record - March 25, 2019

On Tuesday, March 19th, CHS celebrated academic excellence with its annual Academic Banquet.  A total of 116 students were in attendance.  This number of students represents 37% of the high school population.  Each student had at least a 3.5 grade point average or better.  Congratulations to each of the students that received this recognition!  Thank you to the Academic banquet Committee for their hard work making this evening special for our students and their families.   

Congratulations to the three CHS students who represented CHS at the 66th Annual Northeastern Ohio Science and Engineering Fair at Cleveland State University:   Madeleine Finton 3rd place, Landon Hunt 3rd place and Caitlin Wilkins 2nd place.   Great job students!

Congratulations to the six 7th grade students that represented Columbia Middle School at the 66th Annual Northeastern Ohio Science and Engineering Fair at Cleveland State University: Rachel Bledsoe and Liliana Hritz received Honorable Mention awards. Cameron Baker, Delaney Friscone and Bella Stofey each received 3rd place awards and Samantha Geiger received a 2nd place.  Great job ladies!  Thank you to Mrs. Karl for her hard work and dedication to our Science Fair!

Family Literacy Night will take place on Monday March 25th from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm at Arena 51 Laser Tag.  There will be literacy style carnival games and a mystery theatre.  Any student in grades 5-8 is invited to attend.  If you need more information, please contact CMS at 236-5741.

Rural Urban Record - March 18, 2019

The next Board of Education meeting will take place on Wednesday, March 20th at 7:00 pm at CHS in the Columbia Community Foundation Media Center.  I make mention of this because prior to this meeting at 6:00 pm we will have a BOE work session.  The work session will focus on the future of our district as it relates to the housing boom in Columbia Township.  Public Finance Resources, a firm hired by CLSD, will be in attendance to provide an analysis of the effect the increase in new construction will have on the district's enrollment, real estate revenue levels and state funding as well as information in regards to a substitute levy.  Many changes are taking place in our town that will affect the future of our schools.  Please plan on attending this important event.

We are getting very close to competition and events for our spring sports.  I would like to wish all of our student-athletes and coaches the best of luck in track, baseball and softball.  All schedules are posted on the CHS website under athletics.  I hope that you can stop out and support our teams!  Go Raiders!

Rural Urban Record - March 4, 2019

The next edition of the “Raider Reflections” newsletter is an insert in this week’s Rural Urban Record.  Please take a few minutes to read the exciting news that we provide our parents and community.  I am very proud of the students, staff and programs in CLSD!  

Parent/Teacher conferences will be held on Wednesday, March 6th after school and Thursday, March 7th midday.  Please visit our website for specific times in each building.  If you need to meet with a teacher, please contact the school in which your child attends.  A reminder that Thursday, March 7th is an early dismissal day for all students and Friday, March 8th there is no school for all staff and students.

Last weekend, our students at CMS and CHS performed at the Lorain County Solo & Ensemble Contest.  Your hard work and dedication to the music program is tremendous!  The following students received an Excellent Rating:  Carissa Templeton, Zach Hritz, Hope Swartz, David Kamms, Vince Milluzzi, Josh Titherage, Arvienna Rodgers, Maggie Murray, Julia Sprinkle and Sami Markosky.  Superior Ratings:  Maya Haoui, David Kamms, Sarak Kittleberger, Tyler Pontikos, Logan Szuch, Cameron Baker, Liliana Hritz, Kalista Cook, Rachel Bledsoe, Addison Stair and Cami Shackelton.  Congratulations to all of you on a job well done!  

Congratulations to our 7th grade girl’s basketball team that finished the regular undefeated at 15-0!  Awesome job to the players and coaches!  Good luck in the PAC tourney!

Rural Urban Record - February 18, 2019

All school buildings and district offices will be closed on Monday, February 18th in observance of President’s Day.

On Monday, February 18th the Columbia Township Fire Department will be conducting a drill at CHS.  This will begin at 6:00 pm.  I wanted everyone to know in case you see emergency vehicles that evening at CHS.  Please do not be alarmed as this is just a drill!

Copopa vs CMS for the Columbia Food Pantry Drive is ongoing and runs through until Friday, February 22nd.  Copopa is collecting toiletries:  toothpaste, toilet paper, tissues, etc.  Columbia Middle School is collecting cleaning items:  paper towels, disinfectant wipes, dish soap, Magic Erasers, cleaning sponges, etc.  CHS is also doing a food drive benefitting Columbia Food Pantry and they are collecting non-perishable food items through February 22.  Anyone in the community can donate by dropping off at any of the schools.  We hope that you can help our schools and students help those in need in our community.

There will be a spring sports mandatory meeting for all parents and students in grades 7-12 that plan on participating in a spring sport.  The mandatory meeting will be held on Monday, February 25th in the CHS cafeteria at 6:00 pm.

The ACT will be administered to all juniors at CHS on Wednesday, February 20th.  This includes juniors that attend the JVS.  There will be no school for freshmen, sophomores and seniors on this day.  This is a great opportunity for these groups to complete community service hours that are required for graduation.  

The ACT Practice Test for 7/8 grade students will be given on Saturday, February 23rd from 8:30 am - 12:00 pm at the Educational Service Center of Lorain County.  Any 7/8 grade student interested in taking the test should pick up information from Mrs. Figliano in the CMS office.
Congratulations to the CMS wrestling team for placing 2nd in the Patriot Athletic Conference Tournament.
Congratulations to the CMS Power of the Pen team for sending five students to the regional tournament in April.

Rural Urban Record - February 11, 2019

Last weekend Columbia Middle School hosted 21 schools and almost 250 students for the Power of the Pen tournament.  This was one the largest tournaments to take place at CMS.  Thank you to Mrs. Kyleen Wilson for all of her hard work organizing this awesome event.  I would also like to thank all of the volunteers and judges that donated their time to make it successful.  Finally, thanks to the Columbia Community Foundation for their support!  Without our community support, we would not be able to host such great events for our students!

Kindergarten registration information will be posted on our website soon.  We are working on our new online portal to register these students.  If you are interested in open enrollment in grades K-12, please contact Pat Cieslak at (440) 236-5008.

The Little Raiders Preschool is coming to CLSD.  We are currently working on the details of the program as well as hiring a teacher and educational aide.  A parents night will be held in March or beginning of April.  Stay tuned for more information!
