I want to thank all of our parents, staff, administrators and Board members for volunteering their time to establish our next five-year strategic plan.  A strategic plan describes how goals will be achieved through the use of available resources.  Our goal with this plan is to improve student outcomes, keep our great staff and enhance the reputation of our district.  This plan will be announced at the State of the Schools on April 22nd at 7:00 pm in the CMS gymnasium.

Congratulations to the newest members of the Columbia High School Athletic Hall of Fame:  Dave Kuhn (1965), Marti Garrow (1985) and Karin Coyne Osborn (2007).  Thank you for your outstanding contributions to CLSD and the Columbia Community!  The induction ceremony will take place on Friday, January 31st after the JV boys basketball game at approximately 6:30.

Rural Urban Record - January 13, 2019

January is School Board Recognition Month. Our Columbia Local School District Board of Education consists of five citizens elected to serve overlapping terms of four years each and is one of over 700 Boards of Education across Ohio.  Current Board members are Mr. Wayne Brassell, Mr. Shawn Ondrejko, Mrs. Blanche Nemeth, Mr. Stephen Coleman and Mrs. Megan Champagne.

Board members are elected to represent the community; setting educational goals and establishing district policy based upon Ohio laws and the values of our community.  While school board members come from various walks of life when they are part of the school board, they come together with the common goals of promoting continuous improvement in our schools and increasing student learning and achievement.  Each year, members of our Columbia Local Schools Board of Education contribute hundreds and hundreds of hours to the students of our community.  Not only do they spend hours preparing for and attending Board meetings, but also listening to staff, student, parent and community concerns, attending seminars and training sessions and are present at many community and school events. Their commitment to student learning and concern for our students is evident in all they do for our schools and our community.  On behalf of the staff and students of the Columbia Local Schools, I want to thank each one of our Board of Education members for their time and commitment to the continuing success of our students and our schools.  Your dedication to education has helped make our schools a better place.  My hope is that our community members, staff, parents, and students will make a special effort to tell our school board members that their hard work is very much appreciated.

The next Board of Education meeting will take place on Wednesday, January 15th at 7:00 pm at CMS in room #20.  Hope that you can attend!
CHS and CMS will hold their annual Science Fair on Thursday, January 16th at 6:00 pm in the CHS cafeteria.  Please stop by and see the amazing projects our scientists prepare.

There will be no school for students on Monday, January 20th and Friday, January 24th.  Monday we will observe the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.  Friday is the end of the semester in-service day where staff will be finalizing and preparing for the 2nd half of the school year.  All school buildings and district offices will be closed on the 20th.

CLSD’s “Raider Reflections” newsletter is an insert in this week’s Rural Urban Record.  Please take a moment to read the great things happening in our district!  I am so proud of our students and staff!

Rural Urban Record - October 21, 2019

Our annual Family Math Night will take place at Red Wagon Farm on Wednesday, October 23rd.  It begins at 5:00 pm.  We anticipate 300 people at his event.  Thank you to Red Wagon Farm for your continued partnership!

On October 25th the varsity football team will play its last home game of the season.  They will take on Brookside at 7:00 pm.  We will also recognize the following teams prior to the game for Senior Night:  football, cross country, boys golf, girls golf, cheerleaders and the band.  We hope you can join us to celebrate the accomplishments of these fine young people and their parents!

The end of the 1st grading period is on Friday, November 1st.  Parent/Teacher conferences will be held on Wednesday, November 6th and Thursday, November 7th.  Please contact your child’s school for more information.  A reminder that Thursday will be an early release day.  There will be no school on Friday, November 8th for staff or students!  All district buildings and offices will be closed on this day.

There will be no school for students on Monday, November 4th as our staff will participate in professional development at Lorain County Community College.  This day is a collaboration with other county schools:  Keystone, Wellington, Firelands and Clearview.  We look forward to a great day of learning!

Reminder…CLSD will be on the ballot this November 5th for Issues 10 and 11.  Issue #10 - Substitute Levy is not a tax increase!  Issue #10 combines CLSD’s two existing Emergency Levies into one Substitute Levy.  The term of this levy is for ten (10) years.  The Substitute Levy is the same as an Emergency Levy in the revenue it generates (fixed dollar) and the taxes paid by current homeowners.  The difference between the levies is that a Substitute Levy permits revenue growth on “new” construction in the school district each year.  Issue #11 is a 2 mill Permanent Improvement renewal levy for a term of five (5) years.  This is not a tax increase!  This will allow CLSD to continue to renovate and fix district buildings and grounds, purchase technology, buses, and make improvements, etc.  If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me or go to our website under “Our District.”

Have a great week Raider Nation!

Columbia PTO is trying something new this year!  Instead of holding incentive-based fundraisers, the PTO has initiated its 1st Direct Donation Campaign.  The PTO members are parents just like you who understand how busy family life is and know fundraisers can be a hassle.  The direct donation is a one-time donation to the PTO that is 100% tax deductible and you don’t have to sell anything.  With this one-time donation you help fund assemblies, field trip transportation, classroom enrichment grants, high school scholarships and much more!  For more information, please visit the PTO’s website.  Thank you for your support of the programs that enrich our students educational experience at CLSD.

Congratulations to the 2019 Homecoming Queen Tracy Groleau and King Carson Heidecker!  It was a memorable weekend for our students.  Thank you to Mrs. Scott and Leader’s Club for making it a weekend to remember!  Thank you to all of the alumni that returned to CHS.  It was great seeing so many recent graduates and it was awesome meeting those from years past!  As I always say, Once a Raider…Always a Raider!

Thank you to our Columbia Township Service Garage for their partnership with CLSD.  We appreciate the working relationship and all that you do for the community!
