Rural Urban Record - November 11, 2019

On behalf of Columbia Local Schools, we would like to thank our great community for supporting Issues 10 and 11!  We are extremely thankful for your support.  We will continue to make you proud and remain fiscally responsible.  Our future looks very bright due to your support!  Thanks again from our Board of Education, staff and students!

The CHS chapter of the National Honor Society will have its induction ceremony on Wednesday, November 13th at 7:00 pm in the gymnasium.  The community is welcome to attend.

Well, the cold season has arrived.  With the cold unfortunately comes snow, wind chills, sleet and ice.  We are required to notify the public in regards to the process of school cancellations.  On any day in question, a decision will be made by 6:30 am at the latest, unless there are extenuating circumstances.  Parents will be notified by phone call, Twitter, the district website and local television stations.  The decision to hold classes or cancel them is not an easy one and I take it very seriously.  At the end of the day, the decision is made in the best interest and safety of our student drivers at CHS and our bus fleet.  Thank you in advance for your understanding.

Have a great week Raider Nation!  It’s GREAT time to be a Raider!

Rural Urban Record - November 4, 2019

CLSD sends its condolences to the Wilson Family, the Columbia Township Fire Department and the community!  Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this difficult time.  Rest in Peace Brett!

After weeks of sharing information on Issues 10 and 11 with you, an important vote is right around the corner.  As a district, we are appreciative of the support of our community.  Both of these issues are for no additional taxes.  These issues come at a time that our community is changing due to the developments that are currently building homes or those that will very soon.  Our goal as a district is to provide for our students and make sure that their future is secure.  All of this includes being fiscally responsible each and every day.  These issues will not increase taxes and allow for us to continue our day to day operations, improvements and fiscal responsibility to our community for years to come.  Back in 2013, with your support, we passed an additional money issue where we promised to not come back to the taxpayers for additional monies for at least five years.  We are currently in year 6 of this promise.  If Issues 10/11 pass on Tuesday, this promise will continue for years to come.  Our Citizens for Schools committee has done an excellent job getting the word out about these issues.  The support we have received from the community has been tremendous!  Please see the Rural Urban today for an advertisement.  Thank you again for supporting CLSD!

CLSD is in critical need of substitute bus drivers and substitute custodians.  If you are interested, please contact me as soon as possible.  There are opportunities for work on a daily basis.

Parent/Teacher conferences will be held on Wednesday, November 6th and Thursday, November 7th.  Please contact your child’s school for more information.  A reminder that Thursday will be an early release day.  There will be no school on Friday, November 8th for staff or students!  All district buildings and offices will be closed on this day.

There will be no school for students on Monday, November 4th as our staff will participate in professional development at Lorain County Community College.  This day is a collaboration with other county schools:  Keystone, Wellington, Firelands and Clearview.  We look forward to a great day of learning!

Rural Urban Record - October 28, 2019

November 5th, Election Day, is quickly approaching.  I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support for Issues 10 and 11.  Our Citizens for Schools committee has done an excellent job getting the word out about these issues.  The support we have received from the community has been tremendous!  Thank you!

Here is information about the issues:  Issue #10 - Substitute Levy is not a tax increase!  Issue #10 combines CLSD’s two existing Emergency Levies into one Substitute Levy.  The term of this levy is for ten (10) years.  The Substitute Levy is the same as an Emergency Levy in the revenue it generates (fixed dollar) and the taxes paid by current homeowners.  The difference between the levies is that a Substitute Levy permits revenue growth on “new” construction in the school district each year.  Issue #11 is a 2 mill Permanent Improvement renewal levy for a term of five (5) years.  This is not a tax increase!  This will allow CLSD to continue to renovate and fix district buildings and grounds, purchase technology, buses, and make improvements, etc.

CLSD is in critical need of substitute bus drivers and substitute custodians.  If you are interested, please contact me as soon as possible.  There are opportunities for work on a daily basis.

Columbia PTO is trying something new this year!  Instead of holding incentive-based fundraisers, the PTO has initiated its 1st Direct Donation Campaign.  The PTO members are parents just like you who understand how busy family life is and know fundraisers can be a hassle.  The direct donation is a one-time donation to the PTO that is 100% tax deductible and you don’t have to sell anything.  With this one-time donation you help fund assemblies, field trip transportation, classroom enrichment grants, high school scholarships and much more!  For more information, please visit the PTO’s website.  Thank you for your support of the programs that enrich our students educational experience at CLSD.

Congratulations to the 2019 Homecoming Queen Tracy Groleau and King Carson Heidecker!  It was a memorable weekend for our students.  Thank you to Mrs. Scott and Leader’s Club for making it a weekend to remember!  Thank you to all of the alumni that returned to CHS.  It was great seeing so many recent graduates and it was awesome meeting those from years past!  As I always say, Once a Raider…Always a Raider!

Rural Urban Record - September 23, 2019

The annual release of the Ohio School Report Cards were made public recently.  CLSD and other school districts across the state are rated on specific marks of performance, also called measures, within categories called components.  We receive letter grades on the six components and each one is weighted.  These components make up our final grade.  CLSD’s overall grade as a district was a "B."  I am very proud to say that we continue to improve across the board.  This is a testament to our staff and students!   The administration will continue to dive into the data and make the necessary adjustments so that we can continue to make positive gains.  I am very proud of our students and staff for the hard work and dedication they put forth on a daily basis.  More information can be found on our website, under the “Our District” tab.

You may have noticed our new maintenance building, the painting of the transportation garage and Administration Center and tree clearing by our office. This new garage is the first time our employees will have a home since we sold the Watson property and the old Copopa land.  All of our maintenance vehicles, tools, tractors and supplies will now be in one place.  I know that many of you are curious as to what we are doing with the tree removal behind the garages and next to the park.  In the future, this will be a private access drive for our bus fleet to travel safely to the buildings as well as traffic in and out of the K-8 campus.  It has become very difficult for our drivers to exit our lot with all of the traffic on Route 82. With your support, we are continuing to make improvements to our buildings and grounds.  Thank you!

Attention Seniors: Mark your calendars and grab your parents for Financial Aid Night, Monday, Sept. 23 at 6:30 pm in the high school cafeteria. The FAFSA will be discussed and financial aid and scholarship information to assist with your college plans. If you have any questions, stop in the guidance office. This is a very informative night and is imperative that parents attend.  Hope to see you there.

Citizens for Schools will hold its first general meeting on Monday, September 30th at 6:30 pm at CHS in the cafeteria.  CLSD will be on the ballot this November for Issues 10 and 11.  Issue #10 - Substitute Levy is not a tax increase! This levy cannot be used for salaries and benefits!

If you are interested in placing a sign in support of the levies in your yard, please contact me by email or by phone.  There will also be sign up forms in all of the offices on campus.  Signs will go up on Saturday, October 5th.  Thank you for your support!
