The students of Columbia Local Schools continue to achieve at the highest of levels. A great staff and community are the reasons for our success. This is what makes CLSD one of the best school districts in the State of Ohio. We are proud of the accomplishments of OUR students, staff and community. Thank you for being so supportive!

Rural Urban Record - May 27, 2019

Congratulations to the Class of 2019!  We had a wonderful commencement this past Friday.  I wish you nothing but the best in your future endeavors!  I also want to thank all of our 50-year graduates that made the trip back to your old stomping grounds.  I hope that we made your trip worthwhile.  Once a Raider…Always a Raider!    

Congratulations to all of our young authors that represented Columbia Middle School at LCCC for the Young Authors Conference.  Alyse Young took home the prize for 6th Grade Best of Show Writer Award!  I want to thank the Educational Service Center and our staff for providing this opportunity for our students each year.  

Each school year, the Ohio School Boards Association recognizes local businesses that support their local schools.  Last week at our regular Board of Education meeting, Columbia Schools recognized the following individuals and businesses:

The final edition of the Raider Reflections will be an insert in the Rural Urban Record in the next couple of weeks.  I hope that you take the time to see the exciting happenings in our district.  

The last day of school is Thursday, May 30th.  As always, thank you for your support of Columbia Schools!  This will be my last article until August.  I hope that you have a relaxing, fun and safe summer!  See you all on September 3rd for the first day of school.

Rural Urban Record - May 20, 2019

Breaking News…The Little Raiders Preschool Program is now accepting applications for typical three-year-old preschoolers for the 2019-2020 school year afternoon session.  Some requirements do exist to enroll in the program at three years of age.  For more information, contact our District Registrar, Liz Wenzel, at (440)236-1236.

Congratulations to the following students that represented Columbia Schools and received awards at the State Science Fair last weekend:  Excellent Awards:  Madeleine Finton (9), Maggie Murray (6th) and Selah Davison (5th).  Superior:  Landon Hunt (10), Samantha Geiger (7th), Kaitlyn Miller and Addison Stair (6th).  Kaitlyn Miller received the Lynn Elfner Young Scientist Award.  She was one of 40 total students to receive this award.  There were approximately 1100 students in grades 5-12 at this year's State Science Day.  Congratulations students!

The last regular school day for CHS seniors is Monday, May 20th.  Senior exams will take place on Tuesday, May 21st and Wednesday, May 22nd.  Graduation practice will be held on Thursday, May 23rd and Commencement will be on Friday, May 24th at 7:00 pm at Southwest General Stadium, weather permitting.  If it rains, it will take place in the CHS gymnasium.  

Underclass exams will take place on May 28, 29 and 30.  The last day of school for underclassmen will be May 30th.  

CLSD is still looking for student summer workers.  You must be 18 years of age and have graduated from high school.  This position will begin on June 3rd and run until August 23rd.  If you are interested, please contact Mr. Bansek by phone or email.

Rural Urban Record - May 13, 2019

On Monday, May 6th CHS held its annual Senior Awards Banquet.  It was a fantastic evening as we watched the young men and women of CHS receive awards and scholarships to further his or her education.  This year, the senior class will receive a total of over $1.6 million dollars in grants, scholarships and awards.  This is tremendous amount for a class of 75.  Thank you to all of the organizations that supported our students with scholarships and awards!  We appreciate your dedication to the students of CLSD!

The Lorain County Joint Vocational Schools Senior Recognition Ceremony will take place on Friday, May 17th at 9:00 am at the Lorain Palace.  I want to congratulate our JVS students and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.

Rural Urban Record - May 6, 2019

May 6th through the 10th is Staff Appreciation Week.  It is a week to pay tribute to our teachers and support staff.  I would like to take this opportunity to recognize and thank them for dedicating their lives to the education of our children.  The responsibility of educating students makes teaching one of the most important jobs there is.  The work of the dedicated people in CLSD is priceless.  Teacher and staff appreciation week presents a wonderful opportunity to thank the teachers and support staff for their commitment to children and for their contributions to our community.  The entire staff makes a difference in the lives of every student.  They are role models for all youth.  Their job is difficult and their responsibility great.  The staff literally holds the future of our children in their hands.  The education our children receive today will lead to their success later in life.  The staff not only teaches, they serve as mentors, role models, and confidants for our children.  Please find time to say thank you to the staff during the week.  All CLSD staff should be commended for a job well done throughout this school year.  Thank you to our staff for helping to build a brighter future one student at a time.

Rural Urban Record - April 22, 2019

Columbia Local Schools has a job opening for a bus mechanic.  We would like to fill it immediately.  Requirements for the position:  mechanic must hold ASE certification and have the knowledge to diagnose problems and repair school buses; mechanic must hold a school bus driver’s license validation or have the ability to acquire within one calendar year.  This position is full time with benefits.  If you are interested, please contact Al Cantrell, Transportation Supervisor, at (440) 236-8222.

Rural Urban Record - April 8, 2019

Columbia Local Schools will hold its annual “State of the Schools” on Wednesday, April 10th at 7:00 pm at Columbia Middle School in the gymnasium.  There will be many important items discussed about the future of CLSD, including the new and exciting things that will be offered in our schools in the 2019-20 school year.  Prior to this event, there will be a Board of Education meeting at 5:30 pm.  It is our hope that you can join us on this important evening.

This November, CLSD will have two levies on the ballot:  A renewal Permanent Improvement levy (no additional taxes) and a Substitute levy (no additional taxes).  More information will be shared at our State of the Schools on April 10th as well as on our website and focus groups in the coming months.

A reminder that CLSD will hold an important Little Raiders Preschool meeting on Tuesday, April 9th at 6:00 pm in the Copopa Media Center.  If you are interested in preschool, you should attend.  This meeting is for parents only.  More information can be found on our district website.

Recently, we completed the third nine weeks grading period.  Our students are doing remarkable things both inside the classroom and out.  I am very proud of their accomplishments to this point in the school year.  Cumulative grade point averages for those in grades 5-12 was 3.3 overall.  Our winter student athletes GPA’s were as follows:  Cheerleaders – 3.47, Boys Basketball – 3.57, Girls Basketball 3.79 and Wresting – 3.30.  Great job and continued success!

Rural Urban Record - April 1, 2019

The CHS Drama Department proudly presents the Wizard of OZ.  Show times will be on Friday, April 5th at 7:00 pm and Saturday, April 6th at noon and 7:00 pm.  Tickets are $5.00 at the door.  Come and see our student’s musical talent on display.  You might even get to see a couple of staff members play a vital part in the production as well.  Break a leg!

Recently, Sodexo held their Future Chef competition.  This year’s menu item was Mexican.  We had six contestants who were asked to cook a meal for the judges:  Jonathon Lambillotte, Kaitlyn Glandorf, Canon Erman, Mason Antos, Gracie Isenhour and Lila Seggie.  Congratulations to this year’s champion, 4th grader Kaitlyn Glandorf, who won with her 7 layer vegetarian quesadilla.  I would also like to thank Mr. Bunner, Mr. Magyar and Jackie Pring for judging this competition and all of our food service employees for helping the students.  Awesome job future chefs!

Congratulations to the CMS student students that participated in the Mohican District Science Fair at Ashland University last weekend.  Cameron Baker, Rachel Bledsoe, Delaney Friscone, Bella Stofey, Nathan Chapman, Max Elliott, Madelyn Fox, Savanna Gonzalez, Alianna Ibarra, Sami Markosky, Vaneassa Pierce, Ethan Plants, Alyse Young, Caden Davison, Bella Herhuth, Ava Mescan, and Alexis Miller all received Excellent Ratings.  Samantha Geiger, Logan Cleavenger, Selah Davison, Kaitlyn Miller, Maggie Murray and Addison Stair received Superior Ratings.  Great job, students!

Congratulations to the students that represented CHS at the 59th Mohican District Science Fair at Ashland University.  Caitlin Wilkins received an Excellent Rating.  Landon Hunt and Madeleine Finton received Superior Ratings.  Once again, great job to the students!

Rural Urban Record - March 25, 2019

On Tuesday, March 19th, CHS celebrated academic excellence with its annual Academic Banquet.  A total of 116 students were in attendance.  This number of students represents 37% of the high school population.  Each student had at least a 3.5 grade point average or better.  Congratulations to each of the students that received this recognition!  Thank you to the Academic banquet Committee for their hard work making this evening special for our students and their families.   

Congratulations to the three CHS students who represented CHS at the 66th Annual Northeastern Ohio Science and Engineering Fair at Cleveland State University:   Madeleine Finton 3rd place, Landon Hunt 3rd place and Caitlin Wilkins 2nd place.   Great job students!

Congratulations to the six 7th grade students that represented Columbia Middle School at the 66th Annual Northeastern Ohio Science and Engineering Fair at Cleveland State University: Rachel Bledsoe and Liliana Hritz received Honorable Mention awards. Cameron Baker, Delaney Friscone and Bella Stofey each received 3rd place awards and Samantha Geiger received a 2nd place.  Great job ladies!  Thank you to Mrs. Karl for her hard work and dedication to our Science Fair!

Family Literacy Night will take place on Monday March 25th from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm at Arena 51 Laser Tag.  There will be literacy style carnival games and a mystery theatre.  Any student in grades 5-8 is invited to attend.  If you need more information, please contact CMS at 236-5741.
