Recently the Educational Service Center of Lorain County held their annual pupil transportation personnel and appreciation banquet.  Claire Karl was awarded the Columbia Bus Driver of the Year by Al Cantrell, transportation supervisor.  Mrs. Karl greets all of her students with a warm and caring smile each morning.  She is a great person and represents the district and the department in a positive manner.  Congratulations Claire!

I want to take this opportunity to thank the Ohio State Highway Patrol for riding along on our buses last week.  As a part of National School Bus Safety week, they rode on the buses as well as behind in a car to make sure proper procedures were being followed by the students and drivers.  Safety of the students and drivers is their number one concern in CLSD.

Upcoming events:  11/1 - PTA meeting at Copopa Media Center at 6:30 pm, 11/1 - National Honor Society Induction Ceremony at CHS at 7:00 pm, 11/2 - Columbia Athletic Boosters meeting at 7:00 pm at CHS, 11/3 – End of the 1st grading period.

There is no school for students on Monday, November 6th.  All buildings are closed as we will be off site attending professional development.  Please see below.

On Monday, November 6th our staff will join Keystone, Firelands, Oberlin, Wellington, Sheffield and Clearview for a professional development day on the LCCC campus.  By sharing and partnering, our districts are able to interact by grade level and department and gain knowledge through many opportunities on this day.  I want to thank Carrie Atkinson, Director of Curriculum, and the other districts for all of their hard work in making this day a reality.  Due to collaboration, our students will reap the benefits!

Rural Urban Record - October 16, 2017
The next Board of Education meeting will take place on Wednesday, October 18th at 6:30 pm at CMS in room #20. I make mention of this because prior to this meeting at 5:30 pm we will have a BOE work session. The work session will focus on the future of our district as it relates to the housing boom in Columbia Township. Public Finance Resources, a firm hired by CLSD, will be in attendance to provide an analysis of the effect an increase in new construction will have on the district's enrollment, real estate revenue levels and state funding. Many changes are taking place in our town that will affect the future of our schools. Please plan on attending this important event.

Bus safety week will be held on October 16th through October 20th. The Ohio State Highway Patrol will be riding our buses and following the buses throughout the week. Please do not be alarmed as this is planned each year.

This is a friendly reminder to follow school speed limits when the lights are flashing. This includes slowing down when driving through the parking lots. I have asked the Lorain County Sheriff's Department and OSHP to monitor our school zones as I have noticed an abundance of vehicles not following the speed limit. Please keep our students and your kids in mind when you are driving in the district. Thank you!

Last week was the midpoint of the first nine week grading period. Please follow your child's progress on Power School. If you have a question or concern, please contact the school in which your child attends. Conferences will be held on October 25th: CHS 3:15 pm – 6:15 pm, Copopa/CMS 3:45 pm - 6:45 pm and October 26th: CHS 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm and Copopa/CMS 12:30 pm - 5:30 pm. Call the main office to set up a conference for your child.
Students will be released early from school on October 26th: CHS at 11:15 am and Copopa/CMS at 12:00 pm. Buses will run to and from school on this day. There will be NO PM busing for JVS students on this day.
