Reminder…CLSD will be on the ballot this November 5th for Issues 10 and 11.  Issue #10 - Substitute Levy is not a tax increase!  Issue #10 combines CLSD’s two existing Emergency Levies into one Substitute Levy.  The term of this levy is for ten (10) years.  The Substitute Levy is the same as an Emergency Levy in the revenue it generates (fixed dollar) and the taxes paid by current homeowners.  The difference between the levies is that a Substitute Levy permits revenue growth on “new” construction in the school district each year.  Issue #11 is a 2 mill Permanent Improvement renewal levy for a term of five (5) years.  This is not a tax increase!  This will allow CLSD to continue to renovate and fix district buildings and grounds, purchase technology, buses, and make improvements, etc.  If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me or go to our website under “Our District.”

Have a great week Raider Nation!

Columbia PTO is trying something new this year!  Instead of holding incentive-based fundraisers, the PTO has initiated its 1st Direct Donation Campaign.  The PTO members are parents just like you who understand how busy family life is and know fundraisers can be a hassle.  The direct donation is a one-time donation to the PTO that is 100% tax deductible and you don’t have to sell anything.  With this one-time donation you help fund assemblies, field trip transportation, classroom enrichment grants, high school scholarships and much more!  For more information, please visit the PTO’s website.  Thank you for your support of the programs that enrich our students educational experience at CLSD.

Rural Urban Record - September 23, 2019

The annual release of the Ohio School Report Cards were made public recently.  CLSD and other school districts across the state are rated on specific marks of performance, also called measures, within categories called components.  We receive letter grades on the six components and each one is weighted.  These components make up our final grade.  CLSD’s overall grade as a district was a "B."  I am very proud to say that we continue to improve across the board.  This is a testament to our staff and students!   The administration will continue to dive into the data and make the necessary adjustments so that we can continue to make positive gains.  I am very proud of our students and staff for the hard work and dedication they put forth on a daily basis.  More information can be found on our website, under the “Our District” tab.

You may have noticed our new maintenance building, the painting of the transportation garage and Administration Center and tree clearing by our office. This new garage is the first time our employees will have a home since we sold the Watson property and the old Copopa land.  All of our maintenance vehicles, tools, tractors and supplies will now be in one place.  I know that many of you are curious as to what we are doing with the tree removal behind the garages and next to the park.  In the future, this will be a private access drive for our bus fleet to travel safely to the buildings as well as traffic in and out of the K-8 campus.  It has become very difficult for our drivers to exit our lot with all of the traffic on Route 82. With your support, we are continuing to make improvements to our buildings and grounds.  Thank you!

Attention Seniors: Mark your calendars and grab your parents for Financial Aid Night, Monday, Sept. 23 at 6:30 pm in the high school cafeteria. The FAFSA will be discussed and financial aid and scholarship information to assist with your college plans. If you have any questions, stop in the guidance office. This is a very informative night and is imperative that parents attend.  Hope to see you there.

Rural Urban Record - September 9, 2019

What a great first week of school.  Everything went very smooth.  It was awesome to have our students back on campus.  Thanks to all of our students, staff and parents!  We look forward to another fantastic year!

We are excited to unveil, for the first time, the CLSD District Profile.  Information provided in this document is from school year 2018-2019 and includes financial, district, building and department information, academic achievement and offerings, the Arts, athletics and much more.  This is another way that we are being transparent to the community that supports its schools.  Each year this document will be available for the public to view on our website www.columbia.k12.oh.us   Please click on “Our District” and then on left hand side “District Profile.”  If you have any questions, suggestions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.  Thank you again for your support of Columbia Local Schools!

We are in the last year of the CLSD Strategic Plan.  We will need to form committees this January to begin the process of building our plan for the next five years.  The following committees will be formed:  Student Achievement/Academics, Facilities, Finance/Funding and Connections/Community/Trust.  We would love to have parents, community and staff be a part of this important document.  I anticipate about 3-5 meetings.  If you are interested, please send me an email with your preferred committee.

We are excited about a significant change in our cafeterias in CLSD.  This spring, we decided to hire our own Director of Nutritional Services, Elaine Webber.  We will no longer use the services of Sodexo.  Elaine will direct both kitchens and she brings with her a wealth of experience in the industry.   Free and reduced meal applications are now available.  If you need one, please contact the school in which your child attends.
This coming November, CLSD will be on the ballot for two issues.

Issue #10 - The Substitute Levy is not a tax increase!  Issue #10 combines CLSD’s two existing Emergency Levies into one Substitute Levy.  The term of this levy is for ten (10) years.  Ohio Revised Code (ORC) allows school districts to “combine” Emergency Levies and have one (1) vote (ballot issue) rather than multiple renewals on the ballot over the course of years.

The Substitute Levy is the same as an Emergency Levy in the revenue it generates (fixed dollar) and the taxes paid by current homeowners.  The difference between the levies is that a Substitute Levy permits revenue growth on “new” construction in the school district each year.
In the first year of the Substitute Levy it will generate the exact amount of revenue as the two Emergency Levies that it is replacing.  After the first year, the existing homes/buildings will be taxed the same amount as previous years for the Substitute Levy.  New construction will be taxed at the previous year’s tax rate which will increase revenue for the school district.

Issue #11 is a 2 mill Permanent Improvement renewal levy for a term of five (5) years.  This is not a tax increase.  No new taxes.  This will allow CLSD to continue to renovate and fix district buildings and grounds, purchase technology, buses, and make improvements, etc.  This levy cannot be used for salaries and benefits!

If the new homes that are forecast in the next 10-12 years come to fruition and the Substitute Levy passes, the earliest that we would need to have an additional levy would be 2028.  That means that we would go almost 15 years without asking our community for additional funds.      We are in the process of forming a levy committee.  We need your help and support!  If you are interested, please send me an email.  Our first meeting will take place later in September.

We are always looking to improve the quality of the school district and the services we provide.  If you have a suggestion, question or comment please feel free to call me at (440) 236-5008 or email bansekg@columbia.k12.oh.us
