Rural Urban Record - February 5, 2018
Columbia Local Schools will be on the ballot this coming May.  There will be two renewal operating levies that we are submitting to the electorate of Columbia Township.  These two operating levies are renewals and have not been given an issue number as of yet.  The first general fund operating levy will collect $1,597,000 per year in revenue for CLSD.    This levy was originally passed in 2003.  The second general fund operating levy will collect 5.50 mills per year in revenue for CLSD.  This levy was originally passed in November 2013.  Both of these levies are renewals!  No new taxes!

Passage of these levies will allow Columbia Local Schools to maintain a high-quality education, prepare our students for the jobs of the future, protect property values, retain highly qualified and dedicated employees, purchase new textbooks and upgrade educational technology.  Our schools play a vital role in Columbia Township as it is the largest employer in our town.  CLSD continues to be financially well-managed as stated by the Auditor of State, Dave Yost.  With passage of these two RENEWAL levies, CLSD does not plan to come to the voters for additional taxes for approximately the next 5 years!

Congratulations to Julie Bowes, administrative assistant at CMS, for receiving the Raider Nation Excellence Award for December!  Julie is a dedicated, compassionate and trusting employee.  Thank you so much for all that you do for CMS.  I would also like to recognize Pattie Filer, 6th grade teacher, for being nominated for the award as well.  If you would like to nominate a staff member, please go to our website and click on the Raider Nation Excellence Award tab.

Congratulations to all of the students that participated in the CHS Science Fair recently.  You all did an outstanding job!  Superior Rating:  Mariah Wentz, Ashley Krupinski, Cara Corrado, Connor Lind, Logan Fess, Hope Swartz and Emma Roberts.  Excellent Rating:  Avery Lavinder, Miranda Keller, Landon Hunt, Faith Wilmeth, Aubrie Kliment, Sergio Garibotti, Maria Lovell, David Kamms, Josh Titherage, Jordan Wasko, Natalie Wilkins, Michelle Lovell, Kaia Pierce, Sydney Berg and Kristina Gordiyenl.  Good Rating:  Regan Gallagher. Rural Urban Record - January 15, 2018

The first semester and second grading period ends on January 19th. Students will begin the second semester on Tuesday, January 23rd. There will be no school for students on Monday, January 15th to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Monday, January 22nd for a district professional development day. Thanks to our staff and students for a great first half of the year! I look forward to many more accomplishments in the next few months!

Thank you to our awesome CHS and CMS Science Departments as well as the Science Fair Advisor, Becky Karl, for their hard work and dedication this year with the Science Fair. Job well done! Congratulations to all of the CMS participants from this past week. Finally, thank you to all of the volunteer judges. We could not have done this without any of you. There will be another Science Fair Night on Thursday, January 18th for CHS students due to school being out for weather related closures. Hope to see you in attendance.

January is School Board Recognition Month. I want to thank Wayne Brassell, Stephen Coleman, Blanche Nemeth, Shawn Ondrejko and Megan Champagne for their service to Columbia Local Schools and our community. Below is a letter I like to share with our community each year.

School board members are ordinary people who have an extraordinary dedication to our public schools. It is time we thanked them for their untiring efforts. Too often we forget about the personal sacrifices school board members routinely make. Too often we forget about the important role school board members play in assuring local control over our public schools, control that is in the hands of people we know … people who are our neighbors. Too often we forget that, in the tradition of a representative democracy, school board members are our connection to influencing how our public schools are governed. Too often we are quick to criticize school board members without really knowing all the details that went into any given decision. Too often the efforts of school board members go unrecognized and unrewarded. We can begin to correct these oversights this January, which is School Board Recognition Month. This is a time to show our appreciation and to begin to better understand how school board members work together to provide leadership for our schools. The school board works closely with parents, education professionals and community members to create the educational vision we want for our students. It then formulates goals, defines results and sets the course for an adequate and equitable educational program for all students.   The school board is accountable to the public. It is responsible for assuring the public that the money allocated to the public schools is providing a good return on the investment. Thus, the board oversees regular assessment of the district’s students, staff and programs. The school board also is a strong advocate for public schools and is responsible for communicating the needs of the school district to the public and the public’s expectations to the district. In January, join with others from throughout our district and state to salute the men and women who provide grassroots governance of public schools. Make a special effort to tell each school board member his or her hard work has been noticed and is very much appreciated.

We are always looking to improve the quality of the school district and the services we provide. If you have a suggestion, question or comment please feel free to call me at (440) 236-5008 or email bansekg@columbia.k12.oh.us
