All school buildings and district offices will be closed on Monday, February 18th in observance of President’s Day.

On Monday, February 18th the Columbia Township Fire Department will be conducting a drill at CHS.  This will begin at 6:00 pm.  I wanted everyone to know in case you see emergency vehicles that evening at CHS.  Please do not be alarmed as this is just a drill!

Copopa vs CMS for the Columbia Food Pantry Drive is ongoing and runs through until Friday, February 22nd.  Copopa is collecting toiletries:  toothpaste, toilet paper, tissues, etc.  Columbia Middle School is collecting cleaning items:  paper towels, disinfectant wipes, dish soap, Magic Erasers, cleaning sponges, etc.  CHS is also doing a food drive benefitting Columbia Food Pantry and they are collecting non-perishable food items through February 22.  Anyone in the community can donate by dropping off at any of the schools.  We hope that you can help our schools and students help those in need in our community.

There will be a spring sports mandatory meeting for all parents and students in grades 7-12 that plan on participating in a spring sport.  The mandatory meeting will be held on Monday, February 25th in the CHS cafeteria at 6:00 pm.

The ACT will be administered to all juniors at CHS on Wednesday, February 20th.  This includes juniors that attend the JVS.  There will be no school for freshmen, sophomores and seniors on this day.  This is a great opportunity for these groups to complete community service hours that are required for graduation.

The ACT Practice Test for 7/8 grade students will be given on Saturday, February 23rd from 8:30 am - 12:00 pm at the Educational Service Center of Lorain County.  Any 7/8 grade student interested in taking the test should pick up information from Mrs. Figliano in the CMS office.

Rural Urban Record - February 11, 2019

Last weekend Columbia Middle School hosted 21 schools and almost 250 students for the Power of the Pen tournament.  This was one the largest tournaments to take place at CMS.  Thank you to Mrs. Kyleen Wilson for all of her hard work organizing this awesome event.  I would also like to thank all of the volunteers and judges that donated their time to make it successful.  Finally, thanks to the Columbia Community Foundation for their support!  Without our community support, we would not be able to host such great events for our students!

Kindergarten registration information will be posted on our website soon.  We are working on our new online portal to register these students.  If you are interested in open enrollment in grades K-12, please contact Pat Cieslak at (440) 236-5008.

The Little Raiders Preschool is coming to CLSD.  We are currently working on the details of the program as well as hiring a teacher and educational aide.  A parents night will be held in March or beginning of April.  Stay tuned for more information!

The next Board of Education meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 20th at 7:00 pm at CMS in room #20.

Rural Urban Record - January 14, 2019

January is School Board Recognition Month. Our Columbia Local School District Board of Education consists of five citizens elected to serve overlapping terms of four years each and is one of over 700 Boards of Education across Ohio.  Current Board members are Mr. Wayne Brassell, Mr. Shawn Ondrejko, Mrs. Blanche Nemeth, Mr. Stephen Coleman and Mrs. Megan Champagne.
Board members are elected to represent the community; setting educational goals and establishing district policy based upon Ohio laws and the values of our community.  While school board members come from various walks of life when they are part of the school board, they come together with the common goals of promoting continuous improvement in our schools and increasing student learning and achievement.
Each year, members of our Columbia Local Schools Board of Education contribute hundreds and hundreds of hours to the students of our community.  Not only do they spend hours preparing for and attending Board meetings, but also listen to staff, student, parent and community concerns, attend seminars and training sessions and are present at many community and school events. Their commitment to student learning and concern for our students is evident in all they do for our schools and our community.
On behalf of the staff and students of the Columbia Local Schools, I want to thank each one of our Board of Education members for their time and commitment to the continuing success of our students and our schools.  Your dedication to education has helped make our schools a better place.  I hope many of our community members, staff, parents, and students will make a special effort to tell our school board members that their hard work is very much appreciated.
The next Board of Education meeting will take place on Wednesday, January 16th at 7:00 pm at CMS in room #20.  There will be a work session at 6:00 pm.  Hope that you can attend!
CHS and CMS will hold their annual Science Fair on Thursday, January 17th at 6:00 pm in the CHS cafeteria.  Please stop by and see the amazing projects our scientists prepare.

Rural Urban Record - December 10, 2018

If we need to cancel school due to inclement weather, all parents will receive a call via our all-call system.  This call will be made no later than 6:15 am.  It will also be posted on local television stations, our website and Twitter @graigbansek.  The determination on whether or not to have school during winter weather is not an easy decision, nor is it taken lightly.  Not only do we have buses that are driving in the winter weather, but also have to take into consideration that teenagers are driving to and from the high school.  I have conversations with Mr. Rundle about our local roads, our transportation and maintenance supervisors and local superintendents.  If the buses begin to roll, school will be in session.  If school is in session and you choose not to send your child that is a decision you make as a parent.  I will make a decision that I feel is necessary for the safety and well-being of the children and staff of CLSD.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.  Thank you in advance for your understanding and patience.

All parents and the community are invited to attend the Copopa Art Extravaganza on Tuesday, December 11th beginning at 5:45 pm.  There will also be a book fair starting at 5:45 pm in the media center.  This is a great opportunity to tour the building while viewing the awesome 1st and 3rd grade artwork.

The holidays are right around the corner and we have many concerts to help you get into the spirit.  Our students have worked hard to show off their talents.  We are hoping that you can attend!

Copopa’s 1st and 3rd grade music program will be on Tuesday, December 11th at 6:45 pm.

CMS will hold its 5th and 6th grade concert on Wednesday, December 12th.  It begins at 7:00 pm.

The 7th and 8th grade concert will take place on Thursday, December 13th beginning at 7:00 pm.

The next Board of Education meeting will take place on Wednesday, December 19th at 7:00 pm at CMS in room #20.  There is no work session prior to the meeting.  There will be a short executive session beginning at 6:30 pm.  Hope to see you there!

Thank you to the nearly 100 residents that attended the bi-annual Senior Citizen breakfast this past Wednesday at CHS!  I would also like to thank Ms. Atkinson, Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. Zapior, our Key Club students and our wonderful kitchen staff for preparing and putting on this event.  Thanks, as always, to the Columbia Community Foundation for their partnership and sponsoring.  I hope to see all of you and more return in May!
