Finding Kind assembly

Wednesday, October 21, 2015 is the day that all girls at Columbia Middle School will be participating in an assembly offered by the Kind Campaign. The two hour, free assembly was won in a drawing by the school counselor at CMS, Mrs. Susie Dunn, as a promotion to both showcase Kind Campaign’s documentary film “Finding Kind”,  and to promote kindness among middle school girls. Kind Campaign is an internationally recognized movement, documentary, and school program based upon the powerful belief in KINDness that can bring awareness and healing to the negative and lasting effects of girl-against-girl “crime.”

In February 2009, while attending Pepperdine University, two young girls recognized a problem and decided to do something about it. Lauren Parsekian and Molly Thompson, both affected by female bullying, decided to create a documentary and non-profit that would ultimately change the lives of hundreds of thousands of people across America. The girls have gone on three national tours, spreading their school assembly program and documentary film in hundreds of schools and communities across the country.

Since the founding of Kind Campaign in 2009, the founders have held Kind Campaign assemblies and Finding Kind screenings in hundreds of schools across the country. Being two friends in their mid-twenties, Lauren and Molly are able to connect with young girls on a personal level. They were in the student’s shoes not long ago and because of that, girls listen and relate. Their presentation and interactive activities create a casual and conversational atmosphere that allows girls to feel comfortable about talking about their experiences while opening up to their peers. The Kind Campaign assembly is a life-changing experience that will likely change the social dynamic among the female students within every school they have visited.

We all want to be liked. It’s already hard enough to accept ourselves for who we are, let alone accept the perceptions and judgments that other girls have of us. Over the years, the vicious ways in which females treat each other seems to have become normal, with various media outlets that mock and even glamorize the issue. What everyone often chooses to ignore is the fact that these experiences very often lead to depression, anxiety, loss of self worth, eating disorders, drug abuse, alcoholism, attempted suicide, and actual suicide in millions of girls’ lives.

By participating within the interactive facets of the Kind Campaign website, joining their social networks, and supporting their documentary, Finding Kind, you can choose to take a stand.

Look, all of us know that it’s hard to be a girl sometimes. No one is asking for everyone to become best friends…that’s simply unrealistic. However, through the Kind Campaign assembly, film, and website we are suggesting something very simple: to STOP the competition, STOP the cattiness, STOP the hate, and to BE KIND. To learn more, visit the Kind Campaign website at www.kindcampaign.com. If you have questions about the upcoming assembly, please contact Mrs. Dunn at 440-236-1227 or via email at dunns@columbia.k12.oh.us.
