What is Bullying?

BULLYING

There have been some recent concerns about bullying. I wanted to include a definition of bullying here for parents and students, as well as some helpful information and websites. The definition of bullying is as follows:

Bullying occurs when somebody who is less
powerful than another person or a group is
deliberately and (typically) repeatedly hurt
without in any way deserving that treatment.

There are many different types of bullying. They include:

1. Verbal bullying including derogatory comments and bad names
2. Bullying through social exclusion or isolation
3. Physical bullying such as hitting, kicking, shoving, and spitting
4. Bullying through lies and false rumors
5. Having money or other things taken or damaged by students who bully
6. Being threatened or being forced to do things by students who bully
7. Racial bullying
8. Sexual bullying
9. Cyber bullying (via cell phone or Internet)

Here are some good websites for you to look at for more information about bullying:

There are some great parent and student tips on www.bullying.org

Games, tips, and more for adults and kids can be found at http://www.stopbullyingnow.hrsa.gov/kids/default.aspx

Information about bullying and other youth topics can be found at : http://www.findyouthinfo.gov/topic_bullying.shtml

Remember that not all conflicts are bully related. Sometimes it is just a conflict or an argument and can be worked out. If a true bullying situation exists, please let a grown up know. This is not snitching, it is being safe and responsible.

We can all work together to prevent bullying by not standing by and watching it happen. Being a bystander who does nothing or laughing at bullying will never help! Parents and students can call or email me anytime if they have questions, concerns, or comments.
